I’m often asked what my opinion on racing pocket quads is. Are they really a motor sport, or just a novelty item sold to wannabe racers with more money than sense? Well, I’ve got to say that as far as motorsports go, I think mini pocket quads really fall short.
True, they can travel at high speeds, and are definitely not toys, but in my eyes, they’re not really a serious motor vehicle either. I mean, the electric mini quads don’t even qualify as motors, so it’d be a real push to call it a motorsport!
No, in my eyes, mini pocket quads are the equivalent of bumper cars, or destruction derby golf caddies. A bit of fun, and they even hold a cheap thrill or two, but they’re far from being a competitive sport.
The mini pocket quad is, to the off-road ATV, what the go-kart is to the car; quite a bit of fun, mainly because of the silliness, but at the end of the day it’s no comparison for the real thing. Well, you’d want to take a pocket quad to a serious sporting event, about as much as you’d want to ride your go-kart to work. It doesn’t matter how cool your friends think it is after a day of drinking; it just isn’t going to impress the competition.
That being said, I have been known to spend a day with my friends mucking around on a mini quad, or sometimes a mini dirt bike or mini pocket rocket. Part of the thrill of these things is the fact that they’re usually several sizes too small for the rider; a bit like the clown on the small bicycle at the circus, but faster! So you’re hurtling along the ground at twenty or thirty miles per hour, on a little pocket ATV that is humming like a child’s toy gone manic, as it carries you along mere inches above the ground. Consider yourself warned though; when you come of a mini quad at thirty plus miles an hour, and you’re not wearing any protective gear, you will get hurt. And trust me, you’ll wish you’d driven a little slower, or not attempted such a dumb stunt.
At the end of the day though, as much fun as a mini quad can be, there’s no way I’d trade it in for my full size, Kawasaki beast of an ATV. The mini pocket quad ATV can be a laugh, but it’s nothing compared to the grumbles and growls of a real ATV, and when I take runs down to the local or state competitions, there’s no way I’d ever dream of taking anything less than a full throttle, gasoline fed, full-sized ATV.
